PEBBLE FOR UGANDA: BRINGING HOPE TO CHILD SOLDIERS
LOCAL WOMAN RAISING FUNDS FOR MISSION OF MERCY TO UGANDA
23 year-old Jillian Theriault will be volunteering her services this spring at House of Hope in Western Uganda, along the trade route where HIV/AIDS most devastated the Third World Country. House of Hope focuses on bringing aid and education to the orphans of the area, most of whom lost their parents to AIDS related illnesses. The organization was founded by Jenifer Tumwizere, an educated Ugandan woman who fell in love with the local kids and wanted to help.
Theriault has fostered an enthusiasm for Uganda since 2005, spending the last six years researching the political history, current conflicts, child soldiers, and AIDS. Her personal expedition centers on how to give the children of the area the best chance at a life outside of poverty, loss, and devastation. She has recently sponsored a Ugandan child and plans to visit her during her volunteer mission. Her passion for the people of Uganda is contagious. She writes “I have so much love for the children of Uganda who so easily could have been me: raised in a safe, secure home far from the realities of violence and war. I dreamed in 2005 to ‘go and be the change [I] wish[ed] to see, (Mahatma Gandhi)’ rather than read about it. I have been waiting for six years to go…until now.”
Theriault will be living at House of Hope for one month, teaching primary subjects, arts & crafts, singing & sports. She will also help with first-aid cases at the school, in AIDS clinics nearby, and at a child soldier rehabilitation center. She is raising funds to bring the orphans at House of Hope more school supplies, medical supplies, and any other supplies they need to grow and thrive.
She will be holding a fundraising event on February 23rd, at 6:15 p.m. at the Roxy Wine Bar, located in Kennewick, as well as premiering the documentary The Invisible Children.
